A dark-skinned youth wandered these pathways,
felt sad by the edge of the lake,
And for a century now we’ve cherished
the softest rustle of his steps.

A thick, prickly pine-needle layer
spreads over the low tree stumps.
Here his tricorn hat lay
and a worn book of Parny’s poems.
